Originally designed for mountain bikers, TORQ energy foods are also popular with road racers and triathletes as well as mountaineers and Premier League footballers. Here is The Velo Coach review of Torq Hypotonic drinks.

TORQ Hypotonic

TORQ Hypotonic comes in a handy little canister in packs of 6 sachets, offering 3 different flavors Lemon, Watermelon and Tangerine. What first lured us into testing these here at The Velo Coach HQ was the watermelon flavor, having used another brand who offered the same flavor but had subsequently discontinued it we took the plunge and bought some packs to test.

Each canister has 6 sticks and each stick mixes with water to make a 500ml drink, and is specifically aimed at “optimising hydration where events/sessions are no more than an hour long, and heavy sweat loss is anticipated”. Ideal then for the longer commuters among us or quick interval or hill repeat sessions.

The sticks easily fit in a jersey pocket which makes them really accessible and easy to carry when training, and the fact that these contain no added colours, preservatives or artificial sweeteners in the ingredients is a huge selling point for us here at Velo Coach.

So whats in them? Well sticking with the Watermelon flavor it has Dextrose, Fructose, Citric Acid, Natural Flavouring (3%), Electrolytes (Sodium, Chloride, Calcium Lactate, Potassium Chloride, Magnesium Carbonate), and about 62kCal per stick and are gluten free.

TORQ Hypotonic

TORQ Hypotonic mixes well in your bottle, but we have found that if you do happen to use it on longer rides that it does become unmixed a little and needs shaking up in the bottle before drinking.

As it is not designed to be a full on fuelling drink we like it here at Velo Coach, as it allows us to ensure that we are still getting the required electrolytes but allows you to choose your own carbohydrate intake method, which ironically here at Velo Coach among the bananas and of course cake is TORQ Gels but they are for a different review! The flavor of TORQ Hypotonic is subtle and not over powering unlike some, and they are not sickeningly sweet either. We would say that its a more natural and refreshing taste, and large gulps of it will not leave you feeling sick or like you have sticky residue left in your mouth like we have experienced with some other drinks on the market. The drinks from day one did not leave us with any gastric upset in any shape or form, which is a huge bonus as even some of the simplest sports drinks on the market can upset the sensitive stomachs of the team here at HQ.

All 3 flavors are of high quality and we have been using the TORQ Hypotonic here at Velo Coach for over a year now and they have not left us wanting anything more or wishing to switch brands. Now it has to be said they are not the cheapest on the market, and hover around the £5 to £7 mark, which roughly equals about £1 a stick or £1 a drink which is not the cheapest, but as the old saying goes – you get what you pay for. A score of 4.5 out of 5 from us here at The Velo Coach and the only thing that stopped us offering a 5 is the price.  You can find the whole TORQ range by clicking here!
